TDC1001

Time-to-digital converter

TDC1001 is the world’s first rad-hard single shot TDC with a time resolution lower than 10 picoseconds. TDCs are crucial elements in many sensor readout systems, such as time-of-flight sensors, laser ranging devices, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors particle detectors, etc.

Description

The TDC1001 is a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC), which is used for accurate time measurements in harsh environments. The single shot functionality makes this chip ideal for high precision time measurements on random occurring timing events like nuclear decay or single shot time of flight measurements.
The basic functionality of the TDC1001 can be compared to a stopwatch. The time between a start pulse and a stop pulse is measured with picoseconds resolution.
The device has an automatic internal self-calibration routine correcting possible drifts due to process, voltage, temperature and radiation degradation.

Radiation hardness

  • TID tolerance: 1 kGy
  • LET: > 100 MeV·cm2/mg

Key technical specifications

  • Resolution: < 10 ps
  • Input channels: the TDC chip has two input channels.
  • Power consumption: < 100 mW
  • Supply voltage: 1.2 v
  • Operating temperature: -55 °C and 125 °C.
  • SPI host interface for configuration and readout

Applications

  • Time-of-flight sensors
  • Laser ranging devices
  • LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)
  • Ultrasonic sensors
  • Particle detectors
  • Crossed delay lines
